The Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) was founded in the year 1847. Its mission is to promote science of all fields, in particular fundamental science. The ÖAW (about 600 Austrian and international scientists) is one of the leading research institutions in addition to the universities.
The staff of the Institute for High Energy Physics (HEPHY) amounts to 60 people the half of whom have an academic degree in physics, mathematics, computing or engineering. Main focus of the work of the institute is on participation in international experiments such as CERN, the European organisation for particle physics, and KEK, the Japanese national research institute for high-energy physics. Furthermore the institute takes part in planning of the ILD-experiment at the International Linear Collider (ILC). The institute offers a variety of lectures and practica at the Technical University of Vienna (TU Wien).
