LIP is the main Laboratory in Portugal doing research in
Experimental Particle Physics, with a research group of about 40 researchers and 30 Ph.D. students,
mostly participating in experiments performed at
CERN, the
laboratory of the European Organization for Particle Physics.
LIP is a private society without profit, which gathers people from all over the country, in particular
from
Faculdade de
Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade de Coimbra in Coimbra,
from
Instituto Superior Técnico and
Faculdade de Ciências in Lisboa,
and from
Universidade do Algarve, in Faro.
In the beginning of 2006, LIP members participate in
20 experiments, of which 9 are performed at CERN
(and two are the big LHC experiments
ATLAS and
CMS).
