In March 2008, approximately 10 Masterclass Institutes, all QuarkNet centers, will participate in the US Masterclass. The US Masterclass videoconference will be moderated from the Remote Operations Center at Fermilab. The FNAL ROC will provide an EVO link between US Masterclass Institutes physicists and will assist in moderation.

Research & Teaching

QuarkNet:
Through QuarkNet, high school teachers and particle physicists interact to study elementary particles and learn better ways to teach physics. The experiments include CDF and D0 at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (near Chicago, IL), ATLAS and CMS at CERN (near Geneva, Switzerland) as well as experiments in other parts of the United States and the world.

As of 2008, some 50 QuarkNet centers are spread across the United States. Approximately 10 high school physics teachers and 2 physicists are associated with each QuarkNet center for over 500 participants. High school students are also involved directly in research each summer and indirectly through their teachers.

Fermilab Remote Operations Center:
The FNAL ROC is the research branch at Fermilab for accessing, processing and analyzing various types of local and remote CMS data. In 2006, CMS physicists working from the FNAL ROC participated in real-time data monitoring with the Magnet Test and Cosmic Challenge. In 2007, shift duties for the Silicon Tracker Slice Test and the next phase of the Magnet Test were performed. from the FNAL ROC. For the LHC collider run beginning in 2008, CMS shifts will be taken at the FNAL ROC to complement shifts at CERN.
