The LHC experiment will start data taking in 2008. Though, we can provide you already now with events generated by a simulation that allows you a first glance at the ATLAS detector. For this purpose the educational software HYPATIA was written. It allows you to upload event files and identify particles yourself. HYPATIA was written in JAVA, so you need to the Java Runtime Environment installed (best to the latest version). The Programm and an introduction is available here [195.134.93.152/hypatia/].
Setting Up HYPATIA
For doing the Masterclass exercises, please download the following two packages:
1. HYPATIA Simplified Version:
HYPATIA-sv1.0.0-5.zip (zip-file, 13 MB)
2. HYPATIA event files:
Events_for_Masterclasses_(Simplified_Version).zip (zip-file, 74 MB)
Now, first unzip the Main programm (1.) to a directory you like [For Masterclass student computers, a folder on the computer's desktop would be desirable.].
Now open the directory: You find a file named "hypathia.jar". This is the file that runs HYPATHIA.
On Windows Systems with latest Java Runtime Environment, a double-click on the file will launch HYPATIA.
On Linux Machine with latest Java Runtime Environment, type in the shell prompt:
java -jar hypatia.jar
Now unzip the event files (2.) into the directory "events" that has been generated as a subfolder of the HYPATHIA main program directory.
First steps with HYPATIA
In order to introduce yourself to the HYPATIA and measurements with the ATLAS detector, the HYPATIA team provides two introductions.
1. Under Simplified Basics you find a comprehensive introduction to measurement techniques of the ATLAS detector. Here you can learn how to identify particles through the signal they leave in the detector.
2. The introduction to the Simplified Version of HYPATIA explains how you can use the HYPATIA software in order to extract the information you need to reconstruct a elementary particle, its kinematic parameters (e.g. angle and momentum) in the detector and how you can measure the invariant mass of multiple particles to get the mass of the Higgs boson for example.
